This post is part of our Yacht Automation Series. Today we are going to see why not all automation systems are not created equal and what you should pay attention to when choosing one.
Reliability
As we previously explained, having a functioning home automation system is the basic requirement for a satisfying experience. This is even more true when it comes to yacht automation, as you definitely don’t want to bump into any malfunctioning when you are out to sea. This is why at Advanced Integration we continuously test the products we install to make sure everything works as intended. This includes verifying any compatibility issue prior to the installation and setting up monitoring systems to troubleshoot any eventual problem as it happens.
Since hundreds of new products are hitting the market at any given time, it is important that you either spend considerable time reviewing any piece of equipment you might want to install or find trusted professionals to act as your technology consultants. This is also crucial whenever you are thinking about getting better equipment along the way, as the entirety of your system (relevant drivers etc.) needs to be considered beforehand.
Ease of Use
While automation can make life onboard more enjoyable, complicated interfaces can take all the joy out of using your system. This can be particularly frustrating for less experienced guests and family members, not to mention a headache for the captain of the yacht!
Therefore, it is important to ensure that the system you choose is something you’ll feel comfortable using. For example, many of our clients ask us to control the automation technology via iPad, so they can keep using a device they are already familiar with. By requesting a bespoke interface, you can have a system truly tailored to your lifestyle and pre-programmed scenes that allow one-touch operations. Besides your iPad or iPhone, smart keypads, remotes and touchscreens are also available for full flexibility.
Personalization
Your yacht is most likely an extension of your personality and automation should also closely reflect your tastes. We already suggested some discreet solutions to ensure that technology is only in the way when you want it to be, but more can be done.
A primary example are keypads: they might seem a tiny detail, but they’ll be all over your yacht. Make sure to talk with your chosen integrators about your preferences and, if you already have a designer, insist that they share their vision as early as possible to avoid unnecessary disagreements and delays.
Another examples are blinds and curtains. Besides the aesthetics, confirm with your installer that they are suitable for the marine environment. Moreover, don’t forget to see (and hear!) them in action: some models are quieter than others and that might greatly influence your experience in the long run.
