Project Brief

This is a 37m naval yacht built by Chantier Naval Couach and featuring a Kevlar hull with carbon frames and stringers. Although spectacular to look at and clearly a luxury vessel, its systems were not functioning properly, and staff found them difficult to use.

AV components had been installed separately in each cabin, resulting in limited ventilation, restricted access for maintenance and ultimately loss of privacy. Another challenge was our limited time on the yacht so we had to work with speed and efficiency while taking great care of the expensive permanent wooden fixtures.

Project Outcome

Our automation solution needed to be fully integrated and unobtrusive, robust yet simple enough for anyone to use – from captain and crew to guests. All the current installations had to be removed, redesigned and replaced to comply with the necessary health and safety regulations.

We made a number of modifications over three tight phases:

1) Upgrade the existing entertainment system by integrating a movie server, a new physical network, Wi-Fi, lights and blinds, all controllable through an iPad.

2) Full design, installation and programming of the  automation systems, augmenting the networks and Wi-Fi and adding a music server to the AV system. That way, anyone could stream Pandora, Spotify and other favourites from any device.

3) Make all TVs 4K compatible and with adjustable viewing angles. Install a new waterproof flush-mounted model in the en-suite bathroom of the lower master bedroom.

MORE SPECIFICATIONS ABOUT OUR PROJECT CAN BE FOUND HERE

Phase I:
Custom design and programming of 10 iPads (one for each area/room and one master iPad)
Integration of the existing lighting system of the main deck living room to the master iPad and to the living room iPad

Set up the entertainment system to allow individual screenings simultaneously in all areas using HD video players
Second-fix installation of all AV components in each cabin with extensive and rigorous performance testing
Installation of a Gigabit Ethernet network and various access points with N-technology to cover the whole yacht

Phase II:

Redesign all iPad menus for the automation system and create customised graphics
Top-of-the-range music servers that can easily integrate with the yacht’s automation system
Integrate all shades and blinds on the yacht so they can be controlled using an iPad
Upgrade network backbone to 10 Gigabit and include access points for the Wi-Fi AC technology
An iPad-controlled Lutron lighting system in all six cabins

A special retractable swivel rack for the entertainment system (AV receiver, BD, movie and music servers, switchers, networks) in the lower master cabin

Premium speakers with digital amplification for outdoor use in the aft Copt area. These can withstand all weather conditions while blending seamlessly with their surroundings.
They also have a lifetime warranty
All the AV receivers were upgraded to 4K capability and to support all new sound formats such as Dolby Atmos

Phase III:

Upgrade all TVs to 4K capability
Upgrade the waterproof TV to 4K capability in the en-suite room
Expand the music server to all cabins
Change the existing 32” full HD waterproof TV in the aft Copt to the latest 49” 4K compatible model. Modify the ceiling and outdoor ceiling lift to accommodate the bigger model
Upgrade the speakers on the sundeck
Allow air conditioning to be controlled by the automation system
Install an 8×8 4K HDBT Matrix switcher to integrate with the automation system’s 7-zone movie server. This allows multiple guests to watch movies in any room
